We are one of the only organisations dedicated to providing clean water and good sanitation that will build the pump or toilet from the money you donate. It is only by maintaining that direct link from donation to pump that we guarantee the community’s needs are met and that they receive ongoing critical support.
Pump Aid currently operates in a number of regions throughout sub-Saharan Africa. We maintain programme facilities in Malawi and Liberia. Fundraising, communication and advocacy development activity is led from our UK office. In the field we maintain well digging and pump building teams, project support and a strong monitoring and evaluation function. These combine to allow for well planned and executed programmes, delivering real value against donations. The goal has been to build an infrastructure that is efficient and scalable – both within the communities and regions we currently operate in and in future deployments.
The first Elephant Pump water project was undertaken in 1996. Pump Aid was registered in the United Kingdom in 1998 and granted charitable status the following year. Since then we have built over 7600 pumps in three countries and have built programmes designed to provide many more to communities in need. Along the way we have won awards for both our Elephant Pumps and for our Elephant Toilets. Key to their success has been their ease of construction and the ability for communities to assume responsibility for them. That first pump, built in 1996 is still in operation today!
We are immensely proud of a recent programme undertaken in Liberia. There, we have engaged and trained former child soldiers to deliver water and sanitation projects. To be able to combine our core activity with the added rehabilitative benefit to our staff has been a privilege and something we look forward to developing further.)
