UK and Executive Team

Gwen Vaughan, Chief Executive

Gwen has extensive experience of managing non-profit organizations both in the UK and internationally. She has led such organizations as the Living Earth Foundation (an international organization working across public, private and community sectors for sustainable development), Gingerbread (the UK’s leading organization for lone parent families) and the BAT Biodiversity Partnership (an innovative partnership between corporate and non-profit environmental organizations developing good practice for biodiversity and ecosystem services through the agricultural supply chain). Gwen specializes in strategic organizational development, and has been brought to Pump Aid to consolidate the growth and continued development of the organization.

Peter Boonman, Director of Fundraising

As Director of Fundraising Peter is responsible for generating the organisation’s income strategy and leads on all aspects of fundraising. Peter trained as an economist in The Netherlands and was a bank manager at ABN AMRO and ING for 14 years. In 2000 Peter went to Africa to work as a volunteer for 6 months and instead of returning to banking he became professionally involved in fundraising, project development and setting up organisational systems. Peter has worked in the fields of international development, conflict transformation, HIV/AIDS and children’s communication development and has written a handbook for field staff on grant management and compliance.

Charles Kay, Communications Director

Charles is responsible for Pump Aid’s communications activity. He previously has been engaged by Fairfax I.S. Plc, The Royal Bank Of Scotland, the Virgin Group, Codemasters and Sega.

Moses Muringami, Finance Officer

Moses joined Pump Aid in 2007and worked as a Finance Officer in Zimbabwe and Malawi.  He is currently on secondment in the UK office. Moses is responsible for the Liberia and UK finances as well as co-ordinating finance reports and requirements from Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Thessa Madden, Programme Support Officer

Thessa currently works with the Development Director to ensure the field is fully supported and with developing operations there. Her role also includes M&E and she acts as the point of contact in the UK for all programmes related queries. She also works closely on HR issues.

Alexa Doman, Fundraising and Admin Assistant

Alexa is part of the development team and is responsible for supporting Pump Aid’s individual and community donors.  She is also responsible for Pump Aid’s website and social media communications. Alexa also supports the logistics needs of the UK Pump Aid office.

Programme Delivery Staff

Pump Aid implements it’s programmes through its partner organisations in Western and in Sub-saharan Africa. Below are detailed key programme delivery staff from within these partner organisations.

John Kandulu, Country Director

John joined Pump Aid Malawi in May 2011 with extensive experience working in government, international financing institutions, managing a water utility. Most recently he worked for a major international non-government organisation (Water Aid) as Head of Southern Africa Region, dedicated to the provision of safe water and adequate sanitation to poor communities in developing countries. John specialises in large infrastructure planning, development and management with a bias in the transport, water and sanitation, local government and energy sectors.

Sekaone Phiri, Programmes Manager

Sekaone has vast experience in Programme management. She worked for Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children for eight years before joining Pump Aid Malawi as a Programme Manager in July 2009. She is responsible for planning and management of programme operations.

Norman Tinarwo, Programmes Officer

Norman is currently a Programme Manager for Liberia and continues to support programmes in Malawi and Zimbabwe. Norman  is an expert in rural WASH Programme Management and has solid research and analytical experience in Integrated Water Resources Management . He holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Policy and Planning.

Misheck Vwemu – Programme Officer

Misheck holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health from the University of Malawi and is an experienced Programme Manager. Previously, he has worked on Environmental Health, School Health and Nutrition, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and HIV/Aids projects with Goal Malawi and Concern Worldwide.Additionally, his work also involved statistical data collection and analysis for baseline studies and project beneficiary targeting. Before joining Pump Aid, he was also a part-time lecturer in Health and Nutrition Microbiology.

Lawrence Chakholoma – Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

Lawrence holds a BSc in Environmental Science and technology from the University of Malawi. He has considerable experience in Health and Nutrition projects, integrating water and sanitation components. He has previously worked for the Ministry of Agriculture as a Food and Nutrition Officer, the UNDP / UN Volunteers Programme as a national volunteer, and Concern Universal as  a Nutrition Project Coordinator.

Lawrence was also engaged in short term assignments as a consultant with the National Statistics Office, Save the Children, Bunda College of Agriculture (a constituent college of the University of Malawi) and GOAL Malawi on various M&E system development, project evaluations, trainings and social surveys.
