World Water Day: Our Partnership with One Day’s Wages
This World Water Day, Pump Aid reflects on our recent partnership with One Day’s Wages. With this partnership, we combatted water insecurity and insufficient WASH access for vulnerable children in Malawi.
World Water Day celebrates the importance of freshwater and advocates for the 2.2 billion people living without safe water access. As an organisation focussed on increasing safe water access, we celebrate World Water Day and advocate for sustainable solutions to water insecurity. At Pump Aid, we devote our time and resources to increasing reliable safe water access in rural Malawi. With 1 in 3 Malawians not having convenient access to safe water, it is critical to provide WASH solutions in the most disadvantaged communities. We could not do the work we do without the support of our gracious donors and dedicated partners, such as One Day’s Wages. Continue reading to learn more about our partnership with One Day’s Wages.
Partnership Objectives
Our project with One Day’s Wages centred around Community-based Childcare Centres (CBCCs) in rural Malawi. With children under-5 being some of the most vulnerable to the impacts of water poverty, including illness and malnutrition, it is crucial to target them with WASH solutions. The goal of the project was to improve the health and dignity of children under-5 and their communities through improved WASH facilities and sanitation practices. The project activities included:
- Improving safe water access in targeted CBCCs
- Installing gender-segregated latrines and handwashing stations
- Providing health and hygiene educational workshops
- Support CBCC committees in growing climate-resilient crops
Partnership Outcomes
Through this partnership, we were able to apply our life-changing programmes in 12 CBCCs. The project secured safe access to clean water for the 12 centres, ensuring optimal health and hygiene and promoting successful futures for 716 children. Our partnership also led to the establishment of 5 climate-resilient banana groves near schools that serve as a source of nutrition and income for the CBCCs and surrounding communities. With this work, our primary objectives were achieved, including:
- Improved health outcomes at CBCCs
- Improved hygiene behaviours of children under-5 and surrounding communities
- Improved pre-school education facilities, food intake and school readiness
- Increased CBCC attendance due to improved health
- Reliable WASH infrastructure and maintenance structures
- Improved diets for children under-5 at CBCCs and surrounding communities
This partnership led to significant improvements in the lives of hundreds of children and their surrounding communities. Our interventions prioritise long-term sustainability, and with every project, we aim to develop reliable systems that will ensure sustainable water security. We will continue to support the targeted communities in this project with our sustainable solutions to water poverty.

World Water Day
The global water crisis is a crippling issue that impedes upon the sustainable development of billions worldwide. The theme of World Water Day 2025 is Glacier Preservation, a critical cause as glaciers are melting faster than ever with the potential of devastation for millions. While glacier preservation is not quite relevant to our work in Malawi, it is still vital to understand that the climate crisis has an immense impact on the world’s water supply and infrastructure. This is especially true in low-income developing countries, including Malawi, that are most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change. As we advocate for clean water in rural Malawi, we are working in tandem with millions to improve safe water access for all.
