Global handwashing day

This Global Handwashing Day on 15th October, we’re raising awareness of the importance of hand hygiene.

Why is handwashing so important?

Since the pandemic, the message about handwashing has become more prominent to avoid the spread of COVID-19. However, for rural communities in Malawi with low access to water handwashing is difficult which makes people vulnerable to other waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, this causes ill health. It is particularly harmful for young children as it affects their growth and development, frequent diarrhoea is one of the factors leading to the 42% stunted growth rate among under 5s in Malawi.

How do we promote handwashing at preschools?

We build handwashing stations so children can access basic hygiene facilities and improve their health by washing their hands after using the bathroom and before eating.

We deliver hygiene training to the caregivers to ensure hygiene lessons are embedded through routine, games, and lessons. Many children often encourage their peers, families, and communities to follow these good hygiene practices.
